Encaustics are paintings made with molten beeswax, damar resin and colored pigments. It is an ancient technique from around the 5th C. with a resurgence in the 20th C. by the artist Jasper Johns. Once the wax has cooled the painting is finished. Multiple layers of wax can give the work a translucency unlike any other medium.
